    O2-TURBINE® Aerator

The O2-TURBINE® Aerator combines the physics principles of precession (applied to the rotation of fluids) and centrifugal force. Using precession, the rotating sub-surface disc creates a low pressure zone within its internal chamber. This zone is then filled with air forced down an air tube by surface air pressure. As this air is gathered within the disc, it is immediately expelled by centrifugal force into the surrounding water.

The result is an immediate, continuous, unbelievable barrage of dissolved oxygen that saturates the water. While other self-aspirating aerators exist, they require nearly twice the horsepower to achieve the same results as the O2-TURBINE® Aerator.

The O2-TURBINE® Aerator is designed with a large-diameter stationary draft tube with an unrestricted air inlet to produce the maximum amount of aeration and mixing capacity using the least energy. All aeration and mixing takes place below the water surface, eliminating odors from splashing or spraying. No harmful, bacteria-laden aerosols are generated, keeping the treatment process safe.

  • Tests revealed that the oxygen transfer efficiency in some models can exceed 8,0 kgO2/kW/hr., O2-TURBINE® Aerator can out-perform and outlast virtually every aerator in its class.

    Based upon the above empirical performance and other such tests, a single O2-TURBINE® Aerator can be expected to process up to 2000 m³ of contaminated water in a static basin. In two days, any odor likely will be significantly diminished. In 7 days, large patches of clear water will be observed around the Turbine. In 30 days, the dissolved oxygen level will begin to rise significantly. Notwithstanding this performance, a static 2000 m³ basin should realistically have at least two O2-TURBINE® Aerators for optimal performance. If there is a flow-through of contaminated water, then more O2-TURBINE® Aerator would be needed.

 

The importance of dissolved oxyen in aquaculture

Oxygen is an absolute key to a healthy pond. In a perfect world oxygen enters the pond at the surface of the water. Dissolved oxygen promotes microbes that strip the ability of algae and pond scum to gain a foothold in the pond by robbing them of their nutrients. A lack of dissolved oxygen can lead to algae growth and fish kills. The farm pond in effect can morph from a beneficial source of water for animals and fish to a source of disease and death.

Dissolved oxygen makes it possible for air breathing microbes (aerobes) to live beneath the surface of the water. In this underwater environment these bacteria rapidly digest the excess nutrients. The waste product of the microbes is mostly carbon dioxide which escapes harmlessly into the air. As the nutrient levels decrease, the microbes slowly die off.

Beneficial algae growth at various depths in the pond also produces dissolved oxygen during the daylight hours. Aerobic microorganisms (called aerobes) breathe this subsurface oxygen as they digest the organic nutrients in the water.

Low dissolved oxygen level is the major limiting water quality parameter in aquaculture systems. A critically low dissolved oxygen level occurs in ponds particularly when algal blooms die-off and subsequent decomposition of algal blooms and can cause stress or mortality of prawns in ponds. Chronically low dissolved oxygen levels can reduce growth, feeding and moulting frequency.

On the intensive shrimp farms in Thailand, most farmers install at least 36 hp of aerators per hectare. The DO should not drop below 4 ppm, even in the pre-dawn hours. If they wish to produce large biomass of shrimp, most farms use even more aerators, based on the general rule that you can produce about 450 kg of shrimp for every 1 hp of electric motor aerator.

Farms that are successful in keeping the DO at no less than 4 ppm even in the morning are usually very successful, with good growth rates, a high survival rate and a low FCR. When the DO is maintained at at least 4 ppm, there is seldom a problem with white feces disease or bacterial infections. In contrast, on farms where the DO drops below 4 ppm at night, the shrimp will grow slowly during the culture period and white feces disease is very common.
